1. Enroll in a Driving Course

It's probably been a while since you sat in on a driving class, and maybe some rules have even changed since then. Now, not only can you take a course in-person, but you can even take some online from the comfort of your own home! And if you do follow our advice and take a driving course in the near future, then you will be rewarded with a fantastic refresher on some of the rules you've maybe forgotten about, and maybe learn some new ones for the first time! Either way, this can be a great way to learn more about how you can become a better driver.

2. The Proper Way to Drive

Many of us grew up with the rule of always driving with your hands at "10 and 2," meaning you would hold the steering wheel closer to the top. However, in recent years, it's actually been discovered that the preferred and even safer way to drive is with your hands holding the wheel at lower positions, at "8 and 4" or "9 and 3." Not only will these hand placements allow for better control of your vehicle, but are also easier positions to hold your arms in for extended periods of time.

3. Merging Into Traffic

This is an important tip that we think many drivers could use a refresher on, simply because the act of changing lanes is one of the most common causes of traffic, accidents, and yes, even road rage. Merging works best when all drivers are cautious and patient, and to become better drivers, we really have to learn to be calm. Even when other drivers are speeding around you, it's important to allow people to merge into your lane and not provoke any other drivers. And when it's your turn to change lanes, be very cautious and observant of everything going on around you so you know how much distance you have in order to merge successfully and safely.

4. Don't Drive Distracted

You may have last taken a driving course well before there were any laws against using your cell phone while driving, but now it's a huge problem. When you drive, don't allow yourself to get distracted by the allure of your cell phone. Even taking your eyes off the road for a few seconds to answer a text or call can lead to an accident that could leave you and others injured, or worse. So keep the phone away or turned off while you're driving, and keep in mind these other common driving distractors: car radio, other passengers, food and drinks.
