What Kind of Oil Does a Hyundai Elantra Take?
The right oil for an Elantra depends on the engine under the hood, not the model year alone. Here is how to read the cap and the manual, and what Hyundai asks for on each engine.
Quick answer
Most Elantras with the 2.0-liter engine (2017 and later SE, SEL, Value Edition and Limited) call for SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting the current API and ILSAC gasoline engine standard, with 5W-30 acceptable when 5W-20 is not available. The turbocharged 1.6-liter in the Elantra N Line and the 2.0-liter turbo in the Elantra N call for 5W-30. The Elantra Hybrid's 1.6-liter calls for 0W-20. The oil filler cap on your engine shows the grade; the owner's manual lists the capacity and the standard.

Conventional, blend or full synthetic?
Hyundai's position
Hyundai specifies a viscosity grade and an API/ILSAC standard, not a base oil. Any oil that meets both is acceptable. Turbocharged and hybrid engines are easiest to protect with full synthetic, and that is what Hyundai dealers use.
Why synthetic
Full synthetic resists breakdown at the high temperatures a turbo creates and flows better in a cold Elgin winter. It costs more per change but holds up through the normal interval.
Mixing
Topping up with a different brand of the same grade is fine. Do not switch to a thicker grade to quiet an engine; see us instead.
How often to change it
Hyundai's normal maintenance schedule for recent Elantras calls for an oil and filter change at set mileage or time intervals listed in the owner's manual, with a shorter severe-use interval for short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing or extreme temperatures. Much Chicago-area driving counts as severe. - Drain the oil, replace the drain plug washer if your engine uses one, and torque the plug to the manual's spec.

- Fill to the capacity in the manual, wait, check the dipstick and top up to the full mark.
- Run the engine, check for leaks, recheck the level and reset the reminder.
