Play in the Leaves, Have a Bonfire & More

Say what you will about the Chicago-area winters, but we have a pretty nice fall season! And you don't always have to go far to enjoy it. If you're lucky enough to have a yard, turn the chore of raking into a game and jump in some leaves-a fantastic activity for toddlers. Have a bonfire in the backyard with neighbors, because who doesn't love s'mores? Heck, simply make a point to go to the park down the street more often than usual-you can even create a park scavenger hunt for the kids. The weather may be getting colder and chillier, but watching the leaves change colors is worth it.

Paul Wolff Campground

The Paul Wolff Campground (38W235 Big Timber Rd.) is located within the Burnidge Forest Preserve and makes for a great opportunity to set up a tent, pop-up trailer, or motorhome! The rolling, hilly surroundings are covered in wildflowers and, needless to say, make for a beautiful camping site. Camping season runs from May 1 to Oct. 31 each year. Fees range from $15 to $35 a day, depending on the campsite and whether you're a resident. Also, there are several equestrian sites for the horse lovers out there!
