You’ve probably seen cyclists give hand signals when they’re changing lanes or making a turn, right? Did you know that drivers are required to use the same hand signs if your turn signals aren’t working? Do you even know what these hand signals mean when you see them? We might be making you a little nervous right now, but have no fear. Read on, and you’ll be an expert on driving hand signals in no time!

The Basics

You need to use hand signals anytime one of your tail or brake lights isn’t working or when lighting conditions are making it difficult to see signal lights. Bicyclists should always use hand signals, and motorcyclists should, too if there’s any concern about brake lights and tail lights not being visible to other drivers.

Signal before you start to brake, even if you don’t see other vehicles nearby, and continue signaling until you’ve completed your turn or lane change. Don’t forget to signal when you’re pulling in or out of a parking space or from a curb. Each state has its own guidelines for hand signals.

The Signals

  • Left Turn – If you’re turning left or moving from the right lane to the left lane, then you need to make a left-hand turn signal. Roll down your window, and extend your left arm, making it as visible as possible. Hold your arm straight out and extend your fingers. Your palm should be facing forward.
  • Right Turn – If you’re turning right or moving from the left lane to the right lane, then make a right-hand turn signal. Roll down your window, and extend your left arm, making it as visible as possible. Bend your elbow at a 90-degree angle with your hand pointed up and your palm facing forward.
  • Stopping – If you’re going to stop or slow down significantly, you need to make a stopping signal as you press the brake. Roll down your window, and extend your left arm, making it as visible as possible. Bend your elbow at a 90-degree angle with your hand pointed down and your palm facing the drivers behind you.
