The automotive world is buzzing about renewed indications that a Hyundai truck, a possible pickup crossover, may be forthcoming from the automaker.
An Intriguing Concept
Hyundai unveiled the concept for a Santa Cruz pickup, code named the HCD-15, at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, generating a great deal of excitement among attendees who witnessed its debut.
The would-be Hyundai truck is similar in concept to Honda’s Ridgeline, only smaller, and it would be marketed toward younger drivers.
If it gets the greenlight for production from Hyundai, then the Santa Cruz would reportedly feature foundational elements that are similar to those found in the Tucson crossover.
Stunning Appearance
The concept revealed at the Detroit Auto Show was a chrome-covered, space age-esque vehicle that did not imply pickup at first glance. If and when the Santa Cruz hits American dealerships, however, the Hyundai truck may not look the same as the model Detroit show-goers saw, as that version was in no way production ready and didn’t even have an interior.
At the time of the concept unveiling, the platform for the vehicle had not been decided on, and Hyundai was conducting multiple internal design studies.
As soon as there is production approval, the Santa Cruz will reportedly become Hyundai’s first diesel model to be released in America.
On Its Way?
The Santa Cruz concept was very well-received at the Detroit show, rekindling unfounded rumors that Hyundai was considering releasing a pickup truck in the United States.
Detroit was reportedly chosen as the debut place for the Santa Cruz, so foreign executives from Hyundai could witness the media’s reaction to the unveiling. According to Hyundai’s North American product planning chief, the company is now anxious to move forward with the idea, and they have completed the engineering feasibility work for the Santa Cruz Hyundai truck. It has already expended more than a year-and-a-half of preparation time in laying out its business case.
