Three cargo figures, three different seat arrangements

With the third row upright, Hyundai lists 14.6 cubic feet behind it. That is the figure to consider when someone needs the back row. Folding only the third row opens the area behind the second row, rated at 40.5 cubic feet. Folding both rear rows opens the maximum 79.6 cubic feet behind the front seats. The front seats are not folded for that maximum-cargo figure.

Those measurements describe volume. They do not tell you the width of the liftgate opening, the floor length available for a rigid box, or whether your particular stroller can sit beside a suitcase. A smaller number can still suit your daily load; the largest number is only useful when you can give up the rear passenger seats.

Passenger count changes the decision

A second-row bench has three seating positions; two captain chairs have two. With the third row folded, that difference matters if three people need to ride behind the driver and front passenger. A bench may accommodate those three in the second row, while a captain-chair layout requires using a third-row seat for the third person. Use the seating positions and restraints intended for each occupant.

Do not assume that every Santa Fe has the same second-row layout. Check the actual vehicle before choosing a loading arrangement. A center aisle and a center seating position serve different needs; neither automatically makes your bags fit better. The seating diagrams show the seating distinction, not the shape or scale of the cargo area.

Check your usual load before the occasional big one

For a household that regularly uses all three rows, begin the fit check with the third row upright. Place the items you carry most often in the remaining space before experimenting with folded seats. If the third row is usually empty, repeat the same check with only that row folded. Keep the second row in the position your passengers actually use.

For bulky items, measure the item at its widest and tallest points, including wheels, handles and packaging. Compare those measurements with the opening and the usable space inside the exact vehicle. Cargo volume is not a cargo-weight limit, and this guide does not promise that a particular piece of furniture, stroller or luggage set will fit.
