OEM vs. aftermarket parts. You’ll hear these terms if you’re shopping around for car maintenance and repairs, but what is the difference?

What Does OEM Mean?

“OEM” stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, and it means that parts are made by the same manufacturer that produced your vehicle. There are many benefits to choosing OEM parts: they’re easy to find at your dealer and you can be confident in the quality. OEM parts are also backed by a factory guarantee, and dealers usually provide a labor guarantee, too.

Aftermarket Car Parts

Third-party companies produce aftermarket car parts, and they’re typically less expensive than OEM parts, but the quality can be unpredictable. They’re often widely available at auto parts stores and service stations, but it can be overwhelming to figure out which is the correct part. And, look closely to make sure the part comes with a warranty. Many aftermarket parts do not.
